Waste Stream Management

WMR can help your company to manage your waste costs by introducing simple disciplines which will bring immediate financial and environmental results.

Here are a few examples relating to various waste streams that we have successfully implemented for our customers. Please see our case studies for further information about the implementations.

Co-Mingled waste collection (commercial )

Some dry commercial wastes can be collected in the same receptacle (wheelie bin or bag etc) and taken to a MRF (Materials Reclamation Facility) for segregation. These would typically include cardboard, paper and plastics but would differ according to how the MRF is set up. This is where WMR’s expertise is utilised by our clients to gain maximum recycling capability with their waste streams. The important issue with Co- Mingling (mixed waste streams) is to keep potentially wet or hazardous streams away from the recyclate.

This is particularly important where your business produces food wastes, either by manufacture or from staff canteens etc. Food wastes will contaminate dry recyclate waste streams and render them impossible to recover by either mechanical or manual segregation methods. There are other recovery routes which our environmental consultants can provide advice to you about where food wastes cannot be separated at source and these can be discussed during our audit process.

Co-Mingled waste collection (construction)

Some dry construction wastes can also be collected in the same receptacle (wheelie bin, skip or rollonof container) and taken to a MRF (Materials Reclamation Facility) for segregation. These would typically include wood and packaging materials or soils and hardcore (brick, ceramics etc).

Plasterboard

Plasterboard products can be collected separately using wheelie bins, one tonne bags and skips depending upon your requirements and the location of your site. We can provide you with a full audited route for your plasterboard materials showing their journey before being recovered and reused.

Glass collections

Glass cullet is usually collected using smaller sized wheelie bins and in most cases colours can be mixed. We can also advise about glass crushing machines which reduce the amount of space required, reduce spillage and reduce noise during collections. In some cases sheet glass can also be recovered and your WMR environmental consultant can assist you with these opportunities.

Bottles

Food waste collections

This is a fairly new but very popular development and WMR has negotiated several options for the collection of segregated food waste for our clients. Some packaging can be left in with the food wastes which are either sent for energy recovery or produces agricultural fertiliser.

Cardboard collections

Cardboard is particularly light and can be bulky so transportation costs can kill off any savings made by clients’ segregation efforts. The best methodology may therefore be to compact this stream to make the numbers work. There are many options for this and your WMR environmental consultant will take you through the options during the auditing process.

Cardboard

Fluorescent tube recycling

The important issue here is to keep the tubes safe and unbroken. This is achieved by bespoke packaging being supplied by us directly to the client to ensure safe storage prior to collection. The specialised process undertaken recovers all glass and importantly the small mercury content from each tube.

Electrical equipment recycling

WMR have a number of methods for the collection of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment).

We collect small quantities of office type WEEE on a regular basis using a number of differing stage methods to suit our clients. We can also arrange larger collections of white goods at very competitive rates.

Please call us to discuss your options.

Printers

Waste handling equipment

It is always talking to one of our environmental consultants about waste handling equipment because there might be a better way for you to handle and store the waste streams you produce - and in can also mean saving in collection charges!

Clearance services (bulky/wait-and-load)

You don’t have any space on site to store wastes?

WMR can arrange several different types of wait-and-load services for you. This can involve one or two men plus vehicle to clear away bulky, difficult or inaccessible wastes or can be used to collect large quantities of certain waste streams such as plasterboard or hardcore from construction sites.

Trading materials

WMR have several trading arrangements in place with paper mills, plastics recyclers and exporters to help you achieve best value for your segregated waste streams. This is ideal where you have already large quantities baled materials on site and need a complete service to be arranged with guaranteed rates paid and recycling reports provided. For instance we currently provide this service to several shopping centres and malls.

Hazardous wastes

Recently amended legislation means that all “special wastes” and several other new waste streams are now classified as Hazardous Wastes. It is important to receive good advice regarding which waste streams are now hazardous and ensure that your company is fully complying with latest legislation. No hazardous wastes are permitted to enter the general waste streams and/or be disposed of at landfill. An example of this is with regard to use paint tins and mastic guns used on construction sites. Call us at WMR to ensure your compliance.

Security Shredding

Under the 1998 Data Protection Act there are a number of obsolete personal data which must be destroyed. This includes personnel files, PAYE VAT and social security records, Customer information and sales enquiries, banking and credit details and personal health information.

You need to be sure that this old data is securely destroyed and WMR can advise you on these procedures and ensure security from start to finish – and issue your company with a destruction certificate.

Just ask one of our environmental consultants when they visit you.
