Co-Mingled waste collection (commercial )
Client: Retail Operator, Central London
Problem:
All general wastes were going into a compactor which was tied into a rental agreement. Only glass was being recycled.
Current recycling rate: 8%
Solution:
WMR worked with the client to segregate all dry waste streams which continued to be placed into the compactor. The streams included cardboard, paper, plastics and metals, mostly resulting from packing and included shrink wrap and strapping.
All of these wastes were transported to an automated recycling facility where they were separated and reprocessed. WMR then provided washable plastic wheeled containers for the wet waste which consisted mostly of canteen/restaurant wastes.
All of these wastes were sent to a waste to energy plant which uses these waste streams as a substitute fuel to create power and generate electricity which is returned to the National Grid to be used locally.
Result:
This client achieved a new recycling rate of 40% and a total recovery rate of 100%

Co-Mingled waste collection (construction)
Client: Construction/fit out contractor, East London site
Problem:
All general wastes were going into skips which were being collected and taken to a waste transfer station where some sorting was undertaken
Current recycling rate: 45%
Solution:
WMR worked with the client to ensure the segregation of all clean dry waste streams into an enclosed skip. These streams included all brick, block and ceramics, all packaging and any clean off cuts of timber.
All of these wastes were transported to an automated recycling facility where they were separated and reprocessed.
WMR then provided wheeled containers for all plasterboard wastes.
All of these wastes were shredded and bulked at a local waste facility then transported by back haulier to a reprocessor who achieves 98% recycling using the products in a number of applications including recycled plasterboard, coloured brick facing and soil enhancement.
WMR also provided a drum container for all hazardous wastes including paint tins and mastic tubes All of these wastes went sent to a specialist reprocessor who achieved a 80% recycling rate.
WMR then provided a skip container for all contaminated wastes; this included cement bags and packaging containing spillage/leaks and sweepings. This container was sent to landfill.
Result:
This client achieved a new recycling and recovery rate of 78% and significantly improved environmental compliance

Glass collections
Client: Entertainment Venue, Covent Garden
Problem:
A reasonable overall recycling rate was being achieved but the volume of glass that was being generated during many event evenings were causing problems, including managing the ordering of additional one-off collections and spillage/over loading leading to health and safety concerns.
Current recycling rate: 100% but reducing to 75% after events due to excess being reloaded into other containers
Solution:
WMR installed special computer linked glass crushing units which notify WMR 24 hours before the containers are full. We then increased the number of containers on site and changed the scheduled collections for “on call” collections.
All staff were trained to operate the glass crushers and each morning 2 members of staff would undertake this task upon arriving for work. The crushing achieved a 4:1 compaction rate thus utilising only one quarter of the previous container capacity, making collections more efficient.
Result:
This client achieved a consistent recycling rate of 100% but more importantly at NO additional cost. The management charge arranged by WMR was the same as the client had paid under the previous arrangement but now he had control of the variations in volume generation. The additional benefits were reduced noise during collections (which pleased his neighbours!) a cleaner and safer site area, and an improved carbon footprint by way of a considerable reduction in collections and therefore lorry movements!
